Obituary for Balwant Suri

Balwant Rai Suri, 95, passed away in his Mount Vernon home, Monday, November 20, 2017, from natural causes. Memorial services are at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday November 29, 2017, at the First Federated Church, Lisbon. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral and Memorial Services in Mount Vernon.

Balwant’s loving wife Margaret preceded him in death in 2009. Also preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers. Surviving are his children; David and Diane of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Rajindar Paul of Anamosa, Iowa, Sheila and Jim Arney of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Ramona and Daryl Tapper of Polk City, Iowa, and Mark and Joanne of Deerfield, Illinois. Balwant is also survived by his grandchildren; Court and Elgn Arney, Benjamin, Marissa Suri and Quinton Raj Edwards-Suri, M. Spencer Tapper, Diedre, Sara, and Dana Suri; and great-grandchildren; Alexander Edejer Suri, Lily Rose Arney, and Ethan Kelly James Arney.

Balwant was born May 3, 1922, in Rasulpur, India. His family lived in nearby Lahore until they fled their home at the time of the great partition between Pakistan and India, to the safety of India. Recognizing the value of education, he traveled to the United States for his Bachelor’s degree at Michigan State, his Master’s degree at the University of Minnesota and his Doctorate degree in Food Technology at Oregon State. In 1951, he married Margaret Elaine MacBeth in Michigan. After a long and varied career that took him around the United States and the world over the next 45 years, Balwant and Margaret retired to the family farm in Mount Vernon.

Balwant loved his family and he loved the land. He was proud of his achievements, and firmly believed in the many opportunities that this country offered. He was always quick to offer advice to anyone who asked on how to take advantage of those opportunities.

Balwant was a very devoted, 40 (plus) year member of the First Federated Church, in Lisbon, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers and plants, a memorial fund for Balwant has been established at the First Federated Church, 115 N. Walnut, Lisbon, Iowa 52253.
